چکیده

Localization of function within the brain has been a cornerstone for understanding an array of communication disorders. Scientific study of the link between focal brain regions and human behaviors now spans two centuries. However, our ability to observe the brain ‘‘in action’’ is a relatively recent event. Early studies of cognitive-related change in blood flow began to populate the literature in the mid-1970s (e.g., Franzen & Ingvar, 1975; Risberg, Halsey, Wills, & Wilson, 1975). Although this technique provided only a two-dimensional map of regional activation, and was gross by today’s standards, this work signaled quantitative leap in the ability to study the normal brain, as well as the impaired brain. With the advent of PET, three-dimensional mapping became possible, with anatomical location improved through co-registration of PET images to MRI images of the same subjects. A major limitation to PET as a research tool today is its limited availability. PET imaging not only requires a knowledgeable research team to conduct studies, but considerable infrastructure to maintain the PET scanner and its associated facilities. With the advent of fMRI, a technique became available that used equipment in common use for medical purposes. Furthermore, it did not require the manufacture and use of radioisotopes required by PET. These factors have contributed to the recent explosion in neuroimaging studies. To illustrate, Medline lists 10 human-oriented fMRI studies before 1995 and over 1300 in 2001. The papers in this volume present examples of neuroimaging applications in areas of research central to the field of communication sciences and disorders.

P28: Neuroimaging in Anxiety Disorders

In recent years, the development of neuroimaging techniques such as high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), positron emission tomography (PET), or single photon emission tomography (SPECT) has promoted the identification of structural and functional characteristics underlying mental disorders to a great extent. In anxiety disorders, recent...

Design and evaluation of validity of an electronic alternative and augmentative communication system for Persian-speaking children

Introduction: Due to the high prevalence of communication disorders, augmentative and alternative communication methods are one the options ahead to solve the problems of these people. Since there are no complex tools for Persian-speaking children with communication disorders, we decided to design communication assistant software for these children that produces sound output. Materials and Meth...

Neuroimaging in Iran: A Review

ABSTRACTNeuroimaging allows noninvasive evaluation of the anatomy, physiology, and function of the brain. It is widely used for diagnosis, treatment planning, and treatment evaluation of neurological disorders as well as understanding functions of the brain in health and disease. Neuroimaging modalities include X-ray computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), single photon emis...

Iranian Brain Imaging Database: A Neuropsychiatric Database of Healthy Brain

Introduction: The Iranian Brain Imaging Database (IBID) was initiated in 2017, with 5 major goals: provide researchers easy access to a neuroimaging database, provide normative quantitative measures of the brain for clinical research purposes, study the aging profile of the brain, examine the association of brain structure and function, and join the ENIGMA consortium. Many prestigious databases...

Can Neuroscience Advance Our Understanding of Core Questions in Communication Studies? an Overview of Communication Neuroscience

Can neuroimaging methods offer any benefit to communication scholars? Although communication scholars draw on multiple, interdisciplinary methods, the field has not traditionally leveraged neuroimaging techniques (Cappella, 1996). By contrast, other social science disciplines have benefitted greatly from the use of neuroscience methodologies to test core theoretical questions (Adolphs, 2003; Ca...
